Back in January, the trendsetters at Vogue declared that 2017 would be all about lagom. It took the rest of us some time to catch on, but it’s finally starting to happen. In part, because lagom’s message seems to offer something many of us desperately want right now: Simple, steady moderation. HuffPo called lagom a “twist on minimalism,” while a recent Travel + Leisure article promised that lagom will “help balance your life.” Even IKEA has tips to help you #livelagom.
But how can lagom help, exactly? Psychologist and wellness expert Niels Eék sums it up best: On one end, we push ourselves too hard working nonstop, always being on our phones, exercising to the extreme, or even overindulging on booze or junky food (bottomless mimosa brunch, woohoo!). Then, we attempt to make up for it with tech-free days, detoxes, or cleanses. “In a world of contrasts and contradictory advice, lagom hits the middle—allowing people to enjoy themselves, but stay healthy and content at the same time,” Eék recently told the BBC.
Embrace hygge and lagom this season with a creamy, comforting—but totally healthy—butternut squash soup!
