While it may seem obvious that each painting is in fact a unique object complete with idiosyncratic issues and limitations, the process of conservation must reflect this. At each stage of a conservation there are multiple materials that can be used, various techniques employed, and the opportunity to deviate from otherwise rote norms to achieve a successful outcome. Often the question is asked “why this and not that” as sometimes the process can appear formulaic.

For this video as the conservation unfolds, the choices available to the conservator are explored and the rational given for why this choice was made and not that.
