It’s rare that we truly know why an artist created a painting. Over the course of its life a painting history is often lost. We may have a final product but the impetus for its execution may never be understood. Even more rare is when that reason is painted on the front of the canvas as in the case with this Italian wedding portrait. But dating from 1450, is it truly what it portends?
