Hybrid sunfish production is in full swing at Blind Pony Hatchery near Sweet Springs.
The young fingerling fish are initially placed into ponds to grow to stocking size.
Once they grow to approximately 6-8″ in size, they are then collected and sorted by size to ensure that only the best are stocked.
The smaller fish are returned to ponds to continue growing for next year’s stockings.
Each year, MDC hatcheries stock more than 30,000 6-8” hybrid sunfish in community lakes around the state for public fishing opportunities.
Hybrid sunfish are also highly prized for kids fishing events due to their quick bite and ability to put up a strong fight.
