April 2022 — MDC staff at the Chesapeake Fish Hatchery near Mt. Vernon take special care to spawn channel catfish. It’s delicate work that produce lots of little catfish.
The offspring will develop into young fish called “fry” and continue to grow during the summer.
They will then be stocked in public lakes in the fall.
Channel catfish are the only fish in MDC’s hatchery system that completes its entire time at the hatchery in one season.
