Katty Guatatoca, member of Ecuador’s Unión Base community of the Kichwa nation, is utilizing ancestral knowledge and skills to recycle inorganic materials like plastic into handmade goods and fabrics. Through this work and with support from the Amazonia Indigenous Women’s Fellowship Program, Katty is helping other women to strengthen and promote sustainable management of the environment, while simultaneously generating economic opportunity.
The Amazonia Indigenous Women’s Fellowship Program, an initiative of Our Future Forests–Amazonia Verde project, supports Indigenous women leaders and the key roles they play in local, national and regional conservation decision-making processes.
