Selva Maya: The Fight for Existence

In the mid-2000s, illegal cattle ranches, many with links to narcotrafficking, threatened to completely decimate Guatemala’s Maya Biosphere Reserve and its communities.

During the past decade, the Government of Guatemala and its partners risked life and limb to expel the illegal ranchers and take the forest back.

Today, in a historic moment, the government of Guatemala has given out contracts permitting local communities to manage and restore these forests, creating jobs while protecting nature for the next 30 years.

Congratulations to the Guatemalan government and the community organizations for protecting Guatemala’s forests for all of humanity!
