Direct Action – A Day in the Life of Operation Milagro

Operation Milagro is Sea Shepherd’s nine year partnership with the Mexican government that protects the world’s most endangered marine mammal; the Vaquita Porpoise.

Fewer than 20 vaquitas remain alive today. The only documented threat to the species is entanglement in gillnets and if not for our efforts over the past nine years, the species would likely be extinct today.

Sea Shepherd’s Operation Milagro continues to improve, adapt and optimize as the challenges to this species threaten its future. We are proud to have removed over 1200 pieces of illegal fishing gear from the Refuge over the past 9 years, but we are even more proud that in 2022 we can now prevent dozens or hundreds of nets from ever even entering the Vaquita Refuge at all.
